Information Technology Department Description.

   The Information Technology (IT) Department supports all County Departments by providing computer and network systems administration, software installation and maintenance, and comprehensive support for all technology-based solutions employed by staff to perform their departmental functions. Department personnel provide business application consulting services, planning support and operational assistance through staff assigned to various projects and strategic initiatives. The IT Department is also responsible for PEG channel operations and the broadcast of local governmental and educational content through the local cable channel provider.

   The IT Department is staffed by a Director and 2 Systems Administrators. They support approximately 400 end-users across more than 20 departments, and 10 business partners. This support covers more than 380 PCs, 40 network printers, 50 network servers, and a multitude of other computer devices. The Department also supports mainframe, server and web-based applications provided by various North Carolina state agencies.

   The County’s enterprise network spans 8 buildings in the downtown campus using a fiber optic backbone to the County Datacenter. This fiber infrastructure distributes network connectivity through 8 Main Distribution Facilities and 10 Intermediate Distribution Facilities. The IT staff is responsible for the installation and maintenance of infrastructure hardware in these facilities. This hardware includes more than 30 switches, 25 wireless access points, firewall and security appliances, and other network related hardware.

   In addition to day-to-day services, the Department is also responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction for the technology infrastructure on which County services are based. In this capacity the Department is responsible for identifying and analyzing new and replacement Information Technology needs, as well as other automation network accessory needs. It is also responsible for recommending and implementing associated standards related to server and desktop operating systems, enterprise-wide software, applications languages and data bases, network connections and telecommunications systems to ensure that the County’s technological environment is enhanced and maintained in a cost-effective manner.
