Uniformed Patrol Unit

Shift supervision for the Uniformed Patrol Unit, of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, consists of a Lieutenant and a Sergeant, who are responsible for direct supervision of their patrol deputies. Under general supervision, a Deputy exercises responsibility for the enforcement of state and local laws relating to public safety and welfare, exercises independent judgment in dealing with dangerous or unusual situations, exercising safety practices and procedures.

Deputies patrol incorporated and unincorporated areas of Richmond County in a patrol car for the purpose of observing the area for possible criminal activity or other conditions that could endanger public safety, investigating complaints, and enforcing laws; maintains high visibility. They investigate suspicious actions and activity, assist and report accidents to the appropriate agency, as well as watch for dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions. Also, Deputies assist motorists along the roadways of Richmond County as needed in various situations.

Deputies investigate crimes, interviews witnesses, complainants, and victims; and gather physical evidence and preserves for court; conducts follow up investigations as needed. And when needed call for the assistance of a Detective to pursue further detailed investigations.

Deputies are tasked to enforce all felony, misdemeanor, and traffic laws of North Carolina. The Richmond County Sheriff Office also participates in the Governor’s Highway Safety Program in an effort to increase the safety of traveling on the streets and highways of Richmond County for the residence and for those who are traveling through the county.

Deputies apprehend, arrest, and detain criminal suspects and law violators. They serve warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil and other official papers, serve as witness in court and provides evidence in court as required. Deputies also issue citations, if warranted, for violations of the motor vehicle laws of the State of North Carolina.

Deputies respond to emergency calls, such as Civil and Criminal disturbances, Domestic situations, Robberies, Burglaries, Kidnappings, Assaults and Murders, and responds to calls for service in an appropriate and safe manner. They also respond to assist Emergency Medical Services as requested.

Deputies check residential and commercial property for security as requested and checks on senior citizens in the county as requested.

Deputies investigate reports of reported fires or other related events, while keeping bystanders out of danger; safeguarding property, and rendering first aid in emergency situations.

Deputies prepare, processes, and/or complete various reports as required for documenting actions and or reported incidents. Also, Deputies record information concerning events that took place during tour of duty, and records such activity in the manner as prescribed by the department.

Deputies transport mental patients, commitments, and prisoners to prescribed locations as necessary, while being held accountable for the safety and security of the person(s) they transport.

Deputies answer questions asked of them by the general public, works with juveniles and adults in related matters; refer citizens to person or agencies which can provide further assistance as required.

Deputies attend seminars, training sessions, and specialized training courses to remain knowledgeable of operations and promote a professional job performance and to increase their skill set to serve the residents of Richmond County more effectively.
